Sounds Around Grounds

Listen!!

This set of UVa Sonic ID’s were composed by the students in Erik DeLuca’s Introduction to Music and Computers course. We have mapped these audio portraits onto the places that each one describes.

The fall semester brought a pair of collaborations between WTJU radio and students in the Music and Media Studies departments. First, as part of his Intro to Music and Computers course, Music Department lecturer Erik Deluca led his students in the creation of a series of “Sonic IDs,” short sound portraits that captured slices of life at U.Va. The pieces included sound captures and interviews featuring beloved Newcomb Hall dining worker Ms. Kathy (who also got her own mention in Kevin Spacey’s JPJ appearance!) as well as a feature in which students shared Brandon Avenue parking tales of woe. The pieces were played on the station and are posted here. Meanwhile, Elliot Majerczyk, producer of “With Good Reason” at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, taught a Media Studies practicum on radio production. His students discovered a different side of their professors by interviewing them about the music they love.
