Welcome Back from UVA Arts!

Students are back which means Arts Grounds is buzzing once again - as much as it can in this new normal. As we enter the third semester of hybrid and distance learning, we highlight stories of continued innovation and inspiration in the arts at UVA. Our students and faculty have not slowed down, but continue to create, inspire, and engage.

The 2020 Virginia Film Festival Goes Virtual & Adds Drive-Ins!!

The 2020 Virginia Film Festival was, in its own special ways, one for the record books. In fact, just like with everything else in the COVID-19 era, the 2020 VAFF was full of firsts. It was the first hybrid offering since the Festival’s founding in 1989. It was the first to feature not one, but two drive-ins each night. It was the first time all guest interviews were virtual, and the first time the Festival bestowed its American Perspectives Award.

“Life is what happens when you make other plans.”

The line is attributed to a 1957 Reader’s Digest quote from Allen Saunders, and was famously used by John Lennon in his song Beautiful Boy. But for the purposes of this story, the first word may easily be substituted with “archaeology.” Especially this year.

Kluge-Ruhe: A City-wide Exhibition

On March 12, 2020, as Governor Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Henry Skerritt, Curator at the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection dashed out to pick up a copy of the New York Times. Buried among fearful news of the growing pandemic, the paper featured a lengthy article of “the growing interest in Aboriginal art” in the United States.
