Youth Radio Camps

Last summer WTJU devised another way to put the “community” in “community radio station” by launching a pair of summer camps that put area kids behind the mic, and gave them an insider’s experience of both the world of radio, and the people WTJU serves. The inaugural effort, Radio Stories Camp, was co-presented by and held at The Bridge PAI. Students sought out local stories, learned how to create and conduct compelling interviews, and how to tell stories through sound, before ultimately producing mini-features that aired on WTJU. Music Radio Camp also offered a DJ’s eye view of the music scene in Charlottesville complete with trips to performance venues, record and music stores, and a local recording studio. In addition, the campers were treated to in-studio performances by local musicians.
