As part of last fall’s Berlin Wall Symposium, nineteen dance and drama students had the unique opportunity to work with Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre, an innovative contemporary dance company committed to collaborating with artists across disciplines, cultural geographies, and physical borders. Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre, based between New York and Palestine, is led by founder and choreographer Samar Haddad King who employs social media and video conferencing to collaborate and rehearse with dancers across continents. During the week-long residency, King and Associate Artistic Director Zoe Rabinowitz conducted a two-hour dance theatre workshop with nineteen dance and drama students, in addition to setting a work on sevendance minors. Mackenzie Regan, cast member and second year Pre-Commerce and intended Dance minor, said of the experience “This [residency] presented a new way for me to look at dance…I stepped outside of my comfort zone by auditioning, but Samar and Zoe could not have provided a more comfortable and safe space to explore movement.” The residency concluded with a public presentation in the Ruth Caplin Theatre that included contributions from international company members via Skype to discuss the political and cultural contexts that led to the creation of their latest work, Bound. The work set on U.Va. students is scheduled to premiere in the Spring Dance Concert being held in the Ruth Caplin Theatre in April 2015.
