Over There: University Singers European Tour

Support the Singers!

Taking their act on the road is nothing new to U.Va.’s University Singers. Known as the premiere choral ensemble on Grounds, the group has logged plenty of miles in the service of its art. In recent years alone the group has performed in U.S. cities including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New Orleans and Washington, D.C., where they performed in the National Cathedral. This May, the group heads out on its first European tour in decades, with nearly 90 singers getting the chance to perform first for audiences in London and Cambridge, before heading to Central Europe, where the group will perform in Prague, Krakow and Vienna over the course of a two-week journey. “I think this trip will be anincredible opportunity for the students to serve as cultural ambassadors for U.Va., and to perform in some of the great musical capitals of the world,” said University Singers Director Michael Slon. Despite being far from home the tour will likely feature plenty of reunions for the singers, who will visit Jesus College in Cambridge, completing their part of an exchange that saw those singers visit Charlottesville just a few years back. The trip will also find the group reuniting with far-flung members of the U.Va. family. “It’s a great chance not only to extend the U.Va. brand abroad, but also to connect with our alumni overseas,” Slon said. A trip like this takes an extraordinary amount of logistical and financial support, and Slon added that he is particularly grateful to the McIntire Department of Music, the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts and the College of Arts and Sciences for their help in making it all happen. “I think this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for these students to visit Europe not just as tourists, but as musical artists, while at the same time making cultural bonds with our peers in these countries.”
