Trying Art for a Change

Pictured above: Students of Making Art in/with Community locate multiple sites where art in Charlottesville interacts with the public.

This fall, UVA students are exploring the relationships between collective art-making and civic engagement as part of a seminar entitled Making Art in/with Communities. The course, taught by Katie Baer Schetlick, lecturer in dance, and UVA’s Jefferson Teaching Resident, Peter Bussigel, will be considering the history, ethics and organizational structures of community art practices and explore how site specific performance can be used as a platform for social change. The year-long hybrid production/theory course provides students with opportunities to work with local artists and organizations to create and implement their own collaborative projects and programming.
