Ray Roberts is no stranger to playing before big crowds. The former standout offensive lineman at U.Va. regularly played before full stadiums during his college career and then during a nine-year NFL career spent with the Detroit Lions and Seattle Seahawks. On October 16, Roberts stood before two packed houses, this time at Old Cabell Hall, as narrator of Score One for the Orchestra, a presentation of free Youth Concerts by the Charlottesville Symphony at the University of Virginia. The orchestra and its guest narrator introduced the Orchestra’s four families of instruments while presenting a program that included music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Georges Bizet, John Philip Sousa and others to more than 1,500 fourth and fifth-grade students from throughout the area. Roberts, who played the cello from 5th until 12th grade, was able to share with students both the fun and the rigors of playing on a football team and in a symphony orchestra, including pointing out what the two had in common – from needing to stay in shape to learning the playbook (or musical score) to following the instructions of a coach/conductor! The Charlottesville Symphony’s Youth Concerts are supported by The BAMA Works fund of Dave Matthews Band in the Charlottesville Albemarle Community Foundation (CACF), the Mr. and Mrs. James L. Brown Endowed Fund for Youth Orchestras, the Charlottesville Symphony Society, Bailey Printing; U.Va.’s McIntire Department of Music, and Wells Fargo.
