During his 15 years at the University, Richard Will has not only helped to shape the musical and academic lives of his students, but also to forge a path for many to study music here for years to come. In addition to aiding the department in growing its undergraduate program from 35 to nearly 100 students, Will provided critical leadership and guidance for the department’s unique Ph.D. program (profiled in the UVA Arts Magazine vol. 2). Will, who specializes in classical, folk and roots music of America and Europe, recently stepped down as department chair after a highly successful five-year term. He drew high praise from students and colleagues such as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Maurie McInnis, who worked closely with him. “Richard Will was a great leader for the department, building the strength of the department by focusing on the quality of faculty,” she said, “including hiring new colleagues and mentoring others through promotion and tenure. In addition, he worked with the Associate Dean of Arts and Humanities and the Vice Provost for the Arts to lead a university-wide conversation about how to grow and nurture the arts at the University of Virginia.”
