Realms of Earth and Sky

The Fralin Museum of Art recently hosted a stunning exhibition that showcased The Fralin’s collection of South Asian painting that dates back five centuries, and featured a major technological advancement that will take the Museum into the future. “Realms of Earth and Sky: Indian Painting from the Fifteenth to Nineteenth Century,” presented a fascinating collection of paintings that spans many Indian artistic traditions, and highlights the stylistic relationship between Mughal and Rajput paintings. The exhibition was characterized by a vivid array of colors and meticulous detail in a variety of scenes ranging from the opulence of the Mughal Court, to depictions of gods in human form, to highly-detailed battle scenes, and images of intimatecourtly love. It featured works from The Fralin’s collection of South Asian art, recognized as one of the finest of its kind in the Southeast, along with others from prominent private collections. The exhibition was curated by Daniel J. Ehnbom, adjunct curator of South Asian art for The Fralin, and Associate Professor of South Asian Art in the U.Va. McIntire Department of Art, along with Krista Gulbransen, Assistant Professor of Art History at Whitman College, and former Luzak-Lindner Graduate Fellow at The Fralin. The history-rich exhibit featured a distinctly modern touch as well as the debut of The Fralin’s first-ever custom-designed app related to a single exhibition.
