Every Tongue Confess: A Fiery, Unforgettable Evening of Theatre
Last October in the Ruth Caplin Theatre, the U.Va. Department of Drama presented Every Tongue Confess, a powerful play by Marcus Gardley that tells the story of small town Boligee, Alabama, where the soaring summer heat is compounded by a series of church burnings that have townspeople on edge and looking for a perpetrator. Audiences were greeted by a small gospel choir immersing them in the atmosphere of the play directed by Drama Associate Professor Theresa M. Davis who further involved the audience in a church call and response scene. Playwright Gardley deftly intertwined the town’s history, its TV news headlines, gospel music, the Blues, and timeless Biblical lessons to create a fiery theatrical tale.
